In 1951 Poland and the Soviet Union concluded an agreement to exchange land, effectively redrawing their borders. Over 32,000 people were forcibly resettled, their villages destroyed. In the village of Smil’nytsia, the Ukrainian Catholic Church was taken apart for building material, its cemetery abandoned. The abandoned church and cemetery in Smil’nytsia, now the village of Terlo on the border of Ukraine and Poland, were discovered by Ukraine’s border guards and the Rev. Bohdan Prach, rector of the Ukraine Catholic University. With the help of Terlo, the UCU community and FTPUSA, the sacred space was restored in the autumn of 2017. On October 15, 2017, on the 65th anniversary of the resettlement, a moleban, or memorial service, was held on the grounds of the former church and cemetery. Natalka Fiveych greeted the Rev. Bohdan Prach on behalf of FTPUSA. A plaque describing what happened in Smil’nytsia was erected on the side of the road leading to the Ukraine-Poland border.
